Golfo Dulce

Golfo Dulce
is located in southwestern Costa Rica.
And although it is largely unknown, it is absolutely unique in the world and worthy of protection.
The good reasons for this:

01

One of only four tropical fjords in the world

Golfo Dulce is a geological and ecological natural wonder and one of the four tropical fjords in the world. It is distinguished by its unique geographical location and biodiversity. Surrounded by dense rainforest and a variety of coastal ecosystems, this fjord is a vital habitat for numerous marine and animal species, including endangered dolphin and whale populations as well as sea turtles. Its waters not only provide a refuge for countless species but also serve as a key indicator of the health of the entire Pacific ecosystem. Protecting Golfo Dulce is therefore of crucial importance—for preserving biodiversity and ensuring the ecological balance in the region.

02

Central America’s Last Untouched Tropical Fjord

Golfo Dulce is Central America’s last untouched tropical fjord, a unique natural wonder that has been preserved in its original form. Tropical fjords are rare geographical formations found in only a few regions of the world. Apart from Golfo Dulce, there are only three other tropical fjords in the world: the Seychelles Fjord (Indian Ocean), the Andvord Fjord (Antarctica), and the Geirangerfjord (Norway).
[The term “tropical fjord” is used descriptively. Scientific sources often describe Golfo Dulce as a tropical fjord-like embayment because of its deep, sheltered basin, restricted water circulation and unusual oceanographic conditions.]

03

The only place in the world where humpback whales from both hemispheres meet

Golfo Dulce is the only place in the world where humpback whales from both hemispheres meet. During their migrations, whales from the North and South Pacific converge in the waters of Golfo Dulce. This unique encounter makes the fjord an important gathering place for the whales and provides researchers with valuable insights into the animals’ migratory behavior and communication.

Protecting this area is crucial to preserving this rare and impressive interaction.

04

The only WCA whale heritage in Latin America

Golfo Dulce is not only one of just 12 globally recognized WCA whale heritages; it is also the only one in Latin America.

05

Unique biodiversity in a very small space

Golfo Dulce is home to extraordinary biodiversity within a very small area—a unique phenomenon that is unparalleled anywhere in the world. This small, tropical fjord is home to more than 1,100 different marine species, which coexist in such close proximity in no other ecosystem. The diversity ranges from marine habitats to tropical rainforests and is a fascinating example of nature’s power to create a multitude of life forms in a confined space.

This impressive biodiversity makes Golfo Dulce a particularly valuable natural heritage site.

06

2 species of dolphins live here year-round

Two species of dolphins live year-round in Golfo Dulce: the common dolphin and the bottlenose dolphin. These protected waters offer the dolphins ideal conditions for hunting, playing, and communicating. According to estimates, a population of about 150 to 200 dolphins resides in this unique fjord year-round. Their presence makes Golfo Dulce an important habitat and an outstanding location for dolphin research.

Protecting this area is therefore crucial for the well-being of these fascinating marine mammals.

07

Home to 4 of the world's 7 species of sea turtles

Golfo Dulce is the only known place in the world where four of the seven species of sea turtles are native. These species are the green sea turtle, the loggerhead sea turtle, the hawksbill sea turtle, and the leatherback sea turtle. No other place offers such a high diversity of sea turtle species in such a small area. The waters of Golfo Dulce provide ideal nesting and living conditions for the turtles, making this location a globally unique hotspot for the conservation of these endangered animals.

The preservation of this habitat is therefore crucial for the future of these fascinating animals.

08

Endemic species

Golfo Dulce is the only known habitat for the rare, endemic sea snake Hydrophis platurus, which is found exclusively in these waters. This unique species highlights the exceptional biological diversity of Golfo Dulce. Protecting this area is crucial to ensuring the survival of this and other rare species. The high endemism of species in Golfo Dulce makes the fjord an incomparably valuable ecosystem.

Their existence underscores the region’s importance for global conservation.

09

Mangrove Diversity and Conservation

Golfo Dulce is home to an extraordinary variety of mangroves, which serve as important buffer zones between land and sea. These unique ecosystems provide a habitat for numerous species of fish, birds, and other animals. Particularly noteworthy is the high density and biodiversity of the mangrove forests in Golfo Dulce, which are among the best in Central America.

Mangroves not only provide protection against erosion but also play a crucial role in the carbon cycle. The carbon sequestration capacity in Golfo Dulce is 60% higher than the relative area would suggest.

There are reports that the rare Rhizophora mangle mangrove occurs in particularly large stands in Golfo Dulce, making this location an incomparably important habitat.

10

Coral reefs and seagrass beds

Golfo Dulce is home to unique coral reefs and seagrass beds that play a crucial role in the marine ecosystem. These areas serve as nurseries for many fish species and provide habitat for numerous marine creatures, including endangered species. The seagrass beds are particularly important for the stability of the seabed and the maintenance of water quality. Together with the coral reefs, they form a valuable network that contributes to the biodiversity of the Golfo Dulce.

Their integrity is therefore of great importance for the ecological balance and the long-term protection of the region.

11

Waterfowl and migratory birds

Golfo Dulce is an important stopover for migratory birds making stops on their long journeys between North and South America. Especially in winter, visitors can enjoy impressive birdwatching here, including cormorants, greater flamingos, and various species of herons.

Particularly rare bird species, such as the mangrove rail, live year-round in the mangroves of Golfo Dulce.

12

21 rivers

With 21 rivers flowing into the gulf, it has an exceptional water supply for its relatively small size. This abundance of rivers not only contributes to a high nutrient influx but also promotes the growth of mangrove forests, which are crucial to the Golfo Dulce ecosystem. The freshwater inflows from the rivers influence salinity levels and create a unique brackish water ecosystem that provides an optimal habitat for many species.

This geographical feature makes the Golfo Dulce a particularly dynamic and productive ecosystem that maintains enormous biological diversity despite its limited area.

This is yet another reason why this place is considered particularly worthy of protection.

13

National Parks

Golfo Dulce is surrounded by lush rainforests and important nature reserves, making the region one of the most significant ecosystems in Central America. Several of the most renowned national parks are located in the immediate vicinity, including the world-famous

Corcovado National Park, the Piedras Blancas National Park, Esquinas, and the

Golfo Dulce Protected Park.

These areas provide sanctuary for numerous endangered species and play a crucial role in preserving regional biodiversity.

Our immediate neighbor, Michael Schnitzler (81), founded the association “Regenwald der Österreicher” in 1991 and, by 2010, had managed to purchase nearly 4,000 hectares of rainforest for the national park. We wish to carry on his legacy, with a particular focus on protecting the Golfo Dulce and its marine life.

The Golfo Dulce is thus not only a natural wonder in its own right, but also a central component of an extensive network of protected areas that ensures the preservation of these unique habitats.
