Protecting Golfo Dulce Starts Upstream

New research shows that protecting vegetation along rivers may be one of the most effective ways to protect the coastal waters of Golfo Dulce.


When we think about marine conservation, we tend to look toward the ocean. But some of the most important decisions affecting Golfo Dulce are made kilometres inland.


A major new study has analysed land use and coastal water turbidity around 119 river mouths and 64 watersheds in Golfo Dulce.

The result is striking.


Natural vegetation within just 15 metres of rivers and streams was associated with significantly clearer coastal water, with the effect detectable as far as approximately 800 metres offshore.


Pasture and gravel roads showed the opposite relationship. They were associated with increased turbidity, particularly around short, steep rivers with relatively low discharge.


Why this matters for Golfo Dulce

Sediment carried from land into the sea can reduce water clarity and place additional stress on sensitive coastal ecosystems.

This is particularly relevant here. The known coral reefs of Golfo Dulce are located within roughly 800 metres of the coastline, many of them close to river mouths.

The study therefore provides unusually clear evidence of something conservationists have long suspected:

Protecting Golfo Dulce means protecting the connection between rainforest, rivers and sea.


For #SaveGolfoDulce, this creates a practical opportunity.

Protecting existing riparian forest, restoring degraded riverbanks and identifying problematic roads, pastures and river crossings could become targeted conservation measures rather than general environmental aspirations.

It also means that relatively narrow strips of forest may have an importance far beyond their physical size.


From rainforest to reef

There is an important scientific distinction.

The study demonstrates a strong relationship between riparian vegetation and lower coastal turbidity. It does not prove that restoring riverbank forest will automatically restore coral reefs.

But it gives us something extremely valuable: a measurable connection between what happens on land and the condition of the waters entering Golfo Dulce.

The next step should be to identify the watersheds where intervention could have the greatest impact and monitor what happens when degraded areas are protected or restored.
